Intelligence in fertility care for South Australians

Protecting your fertility when you’ve had a cancer diagnosis Podcast with Dr Sally Reid

A cancer diagnosis, as a young person, is difficult enough even without the consideration of the impact of some treatment options may have on fertility.

Fertility SA cancer specialist Dr Sally Reid has treated many patients with cancer, from children and teenagers through to adults in their 20s and 30s.

In this Fertility SA podcast series she explains the fast access to fertility preservation that is available for people with a cancer diagnosis.

“We know that time is critical and that people with a cancer diagnosis need to start treatment as quickly as possible. We can meet with people very quickly to talk through all of the different options, and the right time to do that is before the treatment starts,” she explains.

“We can have sperm, eggs or embryos ready to freeze in as little as 10-14 days, which can provide great assurance to patients with cancer that they have the option to start a family when they are ready in the future.

“But that’s not the only option. There are a range of treatments and strategies to protect ovaries and testes during cancer treatment, and we can talk through all these options with your oncology or haematology team and decide the best way forward.”

Anyone affected by a cancer diagnosis can contact Fertility SA for advice and guidance. Call 8100 2900.
